Check the app for any backup location, access instructions, or special notes before taking action.
Contact the Customer Twice
Attempt contact by phone AND text. If no instructions are provided, make both attempts before selecting the BC RTS code.
Stay Within the Geofence
Perform the BC RTS scan while physically at the delivery location — within the geofence — and remain for at least 30 seconds.
Take a POND Photo
Photograph the closed business entrance, showing signage or hours if visible. This helps document the failed attempt.
Select the Correct RTS Code
Choose Business Closed (BC) in the app. Always select a code — packages returned without an RTS code default to a DCR defect.
Dispute Holiday Closures Promptly
If closed due to a federal or local holiday, dispute via "Business Closed – Federal/Local Holiday" in the DCR dispute tool.

Don't Scan from the Vehicle
Performing the BC RTS scan from inside your van or on the street will fail the geofence requirement and will not earn an exemption.
Don't Skip Business Stops
Skipping a stop increases the chance the business will be closed when you return later, turning a deliverable into an RTS.
Don't Forget to Contact the Customer
Skipping the contact attempt means losing any chance at completing the delivery or qualifying for an alternate exemption path.
Don't Use BC for Contact Compliance Disputes
Business Closed is not eligible for Contact Compliance exemption. Use BC only for genuinely closed businesses.
Don't Skip the POND Photo
Skipping the photo removes documentation of the failed attempt and can affect dispute eligibility.
Don't Return Without Attempting First
Always attempt the delivery before selecting BC. Returning directly to station without an attempt is a DCR defect.
